Project Meeting of the FiBiFlu Research Consortium in Freiburg

On May 7–8, 2026, the partners of the research consortium “Financial Literacy through Finfluencers? Supporting Reflective Learning with Explainer Videos (FiBiFlu)” met at the University of Freiburg for their third project meeting. Funded by the German Federal Ministry for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth (BMBFSFJ), the project investigates how finfluencer explainer videos affect students and how teachers can use such content critically and effectively in the classroom.
The meeting focused on the progress achieved within the individual work packages and on coordinating the next phases of the project. The team from the University of Leipzig presented its work in Work Packages 1 and 2, highlighting the development of a comprehensive literature base on finfluencers, the creation of a coding framework, and the ongoing analysis of explainer videos.
The second day centered on the contributions of the University of Freiburg and the University of Education Freiburg. Discussions focused on the preparation of upcoming studies examining students’ understanding of financial content and teachers’ professional competencies in working with finfluencer explainer videos in educational settings.
Beyond the project-related discussions, the meeting provided an important opportunity for interdisciplinary exchange and strategic planning across institutions. The discussions underscored the value of combining perspectives from communication studies, economics education, educational sciences, and learning research to better understand the opportunities and challenges of digital financial education.
The project team includes Christian Hoffmann, Sandra Binder-Tietz and Julia Blass (University of Leipzig), Franziska Birke, Jana Franke und Bernd Remmele (University of Education Freiburg), as well as Matthias Nückles, Felix Sprenger and colleagues from the University of Freiburg.
